Dr Bethan R Thomas – Human Tissue Compliance Manager

Speaker's Biography

Dr Thomas has over 10 years postdoctoral research experience working with human tissue samples in collaboration with health boards and external companies. In her current role as the Swansea University’s Human Tissue Compliance Manager, she oversees compliance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 and the Human Tissue Authority licence, supporting researchers, technicians, and students in conducting ethical and compliant research with human tissue.

This session will provide professional services staff with an overview of the Human Tissue Act 2004 and Swansea University’s responsibilities under the Human Tissue Authority licence. It will highlight the processes, guidance, and support available to researchers, and outline where staff can sign-post researchers for further advice.

By the end of the session, participants will:
• Understand the purpose of the Human Tissue Act 2004 and the role of the Human Tissue Authority.
• Recognise Swansea University’s responsibilities under its HTA licence.
• Be aware of the processes, policies, and support available to researchers.
• Know where to sign-post researchers for specialist advice and guidance.
