SpeakerRobert Bismuth
Speaker's BiographyRobert Bismuth, a Swansea University alumnus, is a highly successful technologist and entrepreneur based in Seattle. As the CEO and President of Fermat International, he leads multiple high-tech startups and hold numerous influential patents used by both the tech giants and emerging companies worldwide, showcasing his visionary impact on the industry.
Robert’s connection with Swansea University spans decades, beginning with his graduation in 1974 with a First-Class Bachelor of Science in Pure Mathematics, which led him to establish his first high-tech startup in the St. Thomas area of Swansea, collaborating with several banks and stockbrokers in the City of London to enhance transaction and trading speed. This was followed by an MSc in Canada and subsequent return to Swansea as a graduate student doing research in Algebraic Topology and working towards a PhD in Pure Mathematics. His research in the subject sparked an interest in computer science, leading to a role at the Swansea University’s Civil Engineering Department (then headed up by Professor Zienkiewicz). There, he managed a groundbreaking computing facility, pioneering visualisation capabilities for Finite Element Analysis. This early career phase laid the foundation for his innovative trajectory, shaped profoundly by Swansea’s faculty and its emphasis on problem-solving and intuitive thinking.
Today, Robert is the President and CEO of Fermat International, Inc., a pioneering company specialising in big data analytics. Under his leadership, Fermat has developed groundbreaking technology, intellectual property, and products, including high-performance software and hardware with a performance advantage 300 times greater than conventional Xenon servers. As one of the principal inventors behind the company's innovations, he holds five issued U.S. patents, alongside patents in Australia and a forthcoming European patent. These accomplishments build on his extensive patent portfolio developed since the 1990s and reflects his consistent contributions to cutting-edge technology. His expertise has positioned Fermat International as a leader in the analytics industry, delivering transformative solutions with significant competitive advantages.
Robert’s career includes a series of senior leadership roles, often serving as CEO in both private and multinational public companies, where he managed teams of up to 1,000 employees. Known for his strategic vision, he has successfully led international organisations, leveraging his deep technical and business acumen. Beyond operational management, he has played a pivotal role in the high-tech investment ecosystem, advising investors and conducting due diligence on potential ventures.
