This year's Holocaust Memorial Day theme is For a Better Future. Swansea University will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, with an online Zoom event from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Our guest speaker, Melanie Martin, will share the story of Tootje (Cato) Granaat (1926 – 2020).
Tootje (Cato) Granaat was born in Amsterdam in 1926. She had a Jewish upbringing and a happy childhood until the outbreak of the War, which in the Netherlands began in May 1940. Melanie will share what happened when her family tried and failed to flee to England. Melanie's presentation provides a story of bravery, endurance, loss, and love supported by carefully researched historical content. It is illustrated with personal and historical photographs, video clips, letters, and maps.
The talk is open to all staff and students to attend.
